Checkout five reasons why Nigerians love wedding(photos)

1. The colours:

Nigerian weddings are very colourful. The
colours abound in the decorations at the
wedding venue, the asoebi on the guests,
and even the bridal train including the groom
and his groomsmen with their matching ties,
gilet, pocket squares and socks.

2. The food
We can’t even lie about this one. Not like we
don’t have food in our house but wedding
food is sweeter and of course, there is
variety: “sawllow” – semo, eba, amala, iyan,
fufu; soups – edikaikong, egusi, gbegiri and
ewedu, efo riro, ofe onugbu, white soup,
pepper soup… chai! And of course, jollof
rice! Nothing is sweeter than party jollof. We
could manage fried rice sha but party jollof…
Then there is asun, snails, salad, porridge…
Are you salivating already?

3. The drinks
Even if on a normal day one is not
necessarily a drinker, at weddings some just
automatically turn to shayo masters, thanks
to the free drinks. Of course, the quality of
the drinks (and quantity) depends on how
well-to-do the couple or their families are. If
you can’t afford to drink expensive wine on a
regular day, just branch into a Nigerian
wedding and get your first taste of some
quality stuff. Some people even bring very
strong bags so that they can take home the
free (non-alcoholic) wine decorating the
tables plus fruit juices; canned beer yapa!
You’d be lucky if you are not taken home in
a wheel barrow due to over-indulgence.

4. The music and dancing
Weddings used to be staid affairs where the
grown-ups over do themselves in making one
speech after another, extolling and
congratulating the lucky couple. But not
these days. In fact if you have a chairman,
lady of the day and guest of honour at your
wedding nowadays, be prepared for some
snickering from your friends behind
their wedding invites. Weddings are now for
the young. and we go there to party just like
on any other club night. Who cares about
the long dresses and suits! We’ll pull them
up, take them off and dance to the hard
beats long after the bride and groom have
called it a night. Advice: In case you are
planning your wedding, get a DJ and a live
band. One will continue from where the
other stopped.

5. The chances of finding your own The One
Yes o! That’s why some of us don’t skint on
our asoebi style o! Some chicks will even get
their make-up done by a professional like it
is their big day. And some dudes will borrow
car keys and attach to their key chain just
to impress. It’s not that serious. But
seriously, a wedding is a nice place to meet
people, just be careful you don’t fall into the
wrong hands out of desperation.
