Huge blast hits Chinese port city of Ningbo

Image
At least two people were killed after an explosion rocked the port city of Ningbo in eastern China’s Zhejiang province on Sunday, causing buildings to collapse. The explosion, which occurred at about 8.50am, shattered windows up to a kilometre from the blast site. The cause of the explosion was still unknown around 10 hours after it took place. In addition to the two deaths, another two people were “seriously injured” and 16 suffered minor injuries, China’s state-run CCTV reported. While the cause of the blast is still under investigation, it is the latest in a series of incidents that have raised concerns about safety in China’s manufacturing sector. In August 2015, two blasts ripped through the industrial Binhai New Area in the port city of Tianjin, killing 173 people – including firefighters – and injuring hundreds. Another explosion in a residential complex in Fugu county, Shaanxi province, in October last year killed at least 14 people. And in June, an explosion a...

Canadian man killed moments before committing terror attack

A tip from the FBI triggered what Canadian police on Thursday called a “race against time” as police scrambled to identify and locate a balaclava-wearing would-be suicide bomber they feared was on the verge of committing a terror attack in Canada. Aaron Driver, a Canadian man previously banned from associating with Islamic State extremists, prepared a martyrdom video and was about to commit a terrorist attack but was killed Wednesday after he detonated his explosive device in a taxi and was shot at by officers who say they thwarted the plot. Police say they were tipped off by the American authorities, who provided a screenshot of the masked suspect threatening a terror attack early Wednesday, police said. The suspect planned to carry out a suicide bombing in a public area in an urban center during rush hour, Royal Canadian Mounted Police Deputy Commander Mike Cabana said. He identified the suspect as Driver, 24, originally from Winnipeg, Manitoba. RCMP Commander Je...

This Walgreens now stands where the 1692 hangings of the Salem witches took place. Researchers this week pinpointed the exact spot where 19 witches were hanged in Salem centuries ago: a wooded area now overlooking a Walgreens. Salem Mayor Kimberley Driscoll plans to erect a small memorial at Boston Street between Proctor and Pope streets after seven scholars with the Gallows Hill Project confirmed it to be the location of the 1692 hangings. Illustration of Martha Corey, who was found guilty and hanged in 1692. Previously, it was believed that the witches met their maker on Gallows Hill. Researchers used aerial photography, eyewitness accounts and advanced mapping technology to make their determination of the area, known as Proctor’s Ledge, as the killing spot. The work, which spanned five years, also relied on previous research done by historian Sidney Perley, who had also earmarked the area after extensive research. Lead researcher Emerson “Tad” Baker an...
