Google’s AI may be better than doctors at spotting breast cancer

Image
Cancer researchers are constantly advancing the technology that doctors use to screen for, detect, and treat all kinds of cancers, and the survivability prospects have greatly improved over the past few decades. Now, AI is giving scientists another tool in the fight against the disease, and one of the biggest names in the AI game is Google.  Google researchers explain that their AI known as LYNA — short for Lymph Node Assistant — has reached a level of sophistication that it can now tell the difference between cancer and non-cancer on slides with a stunning 99% accuracy. Google explains that, in a pair of recently-published research papers, the LYNA tool demonstrated incredible accuracy in determining whether breast cancer had spread to a patient’s lymph nodes. Determining this is a major factor in deciding how a cancer patient might proceed, and can change the treatment options and approach that doctors take when handling a particular case. Google notes that patho...

Eclipse blindness

Image
People may risk serious eye damage if they look at the partial phases of the upcoming total solar eclipse without proper protection. The “only time it’s safe to look directly at the event” is during “totality,” when the sun is blocked in its entirety by the moon, Dr. Ralph Chou, an eclipse watcher and professor emeritus at the School of Optometry & Vision Science at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, said that, Not everyone will be able to see the total solar eclipse, though many people may be able to see a partial eclipse. Chou emphasized that if you’re in an area where only a partial eclipse can be viewed, there’s never a safe time to look straight-on at the sun. Eclipse blindness Eclipse blindness “describes the injury that occurs when a person looks at the sun without a protective filter during the eclipse,” Chou said. If someone watches the sun without protection, light hits the fovea — a part of the retina which helps humans with fine detail and co...

Mars astronauts face a huge risk of getting cancer

Image
You might want to hold off on purchasing a ticket to Mars. The risk of developing cancer from the galactic cosmic rays on Mars is twice as high as originally estimated, according to a new study published in Scientific Reports. Current assessments used by NASA suggest that cancer caused by this type of cosmic radiation would be contained within the damaged cells. But the latest research shows that damaged cells actually increase the risk of healthy “bystander” cells also getting sick. “We learned the damaged cells send signals to the surrounding, unaffected cells and likely modify the tissues’ microenvironments,” Francis Cucinotta, the study’s lead researcher, told UNLV.edu. “Those signals seem to inspire the healthy cells to mutate, thereby causing additional tumors or cancers.” According to 2013 data from the Radiation Assessment Detector on NASA’s Curiosity Rover, a roundtrip mission to Mars would expose an astronaut to 0.66 sieverts of radiation. Tha...

Simple tricks to make lettuce, kale, and other greens last longer

Image
You just went to the farmer’s market and bought bunches and bunches of fresh lettuce, kale, arugula and herbs. Then you tossed them in the fridge and, a few days later, wound up with bunches of shriveled, rotted, limp and mushy green stuff instead of crisp, healthy deliciousness. Much of the time, the culprit is the way you’re storing them. Here are three simple ways to keep your greens lasting longer in your refrigerator: Greens should stay dirty:  Don’t clean produce until you’re ready to use it. It’s hard to get washed greens completely dry before storing, and dampness encourages bacteria growth. Greens need their space.  Don’t pack veggies tightly together, either; they need space for that oxygen to circulate. Greens should breathe.  This does not mean that they should go full commando in your fridge, especially if you have uncovered fruit in the there, too. Why? Many fruits produce ethylene gas, which can speed up ripening and, ultimately, spoilage. So your...

These 5 foods will improve your sleep

Image
“You can boost your chances of a good night’s sleep by adding some foods to your diet,” says Amy Gorin, a registered dietitian nutritionist and owner of Amy Gorin Nutrition in Jersey City. “Look for ones that contain melatonin or tryptophan because they help to regulate your body’s sleep-wake cycle.” Here Gorin shares fives snacks that help with snoozing. Sunflower seeds No need to wait for Thanksgiving turkey for a dose of tryptophan. A handful of seeds provides the essential amino acid that helps create melatonin, which induces that sleepy feeling. Tart cherries The sour fruit — readily available dried or as a juice — contains melatonin, a hormone that helps keep the body’s internal clock in tune, as well as tryptophan. A 2014 Louisiana State University study found that those who regularly drank tart cherry juice got more sleep than those who consumed a placebo. Salmon The fish scores high in vitamin B6, which is essential in melatonin and serotoni...

Stop buying these drinks right now

Even the most diligent of water drinkers need a little excitement now and then. But before you toss that new sports drink or supposedly healthy soda into your grocery cart, make sure they aren’t on the following list of beverages to avoid at all costs. Flavored coffee If your ground coffee is infused with “hazelnut vanilla” or “pumpkin spice flavor,” that’s a sign you might be drinking both artificial and natural flavors in your morning brew. But what are they really?  people often prefer to see “natural flavors” on a label — it’s more reassuring than “artificial,” which sounds fake and nasty. However, there’s very little difference between the two. The distinction is that natural flavors must originate in plants or animals, while artificial ones are synthesized in a lab, though often they will contain exactly the same chemical structures. Both are mixtures of chemicals — sometimes as many as 100 — that contain solvents, emulsifiers, and preservatives in addition...

Why you should take a hit before hitting the gym

Want to drop some weight? To lighten up, the key may be lighting up. Teetering on the line between taboo and total acceptance, marijuana has finally penetrated the fitness community, owing to benefits beyond the celebrated side effect of just getting high. Medical research has revealed other effects of smoking weed that can actually contribute to fat loss and enhance fitness-related goals. An article published by the American Journal of Epidemiology on the link between obesity and cannabis has revealed a provocative connection between lower rates of obesity and smoking marijuana at least three times per week. The conclusive analysis of the data from the survey involving a pool of over 40,000 people indicates that “despite the evidence that cannabis use stimulates appetite in clinical trials and laboratory studies, cannabis users are actually less likely to be obese than non users in the general population.” Innovations in Clinical Neuroscience  suggests one...
