The National Judicial Commission (NJC) recently sacked Justice Mohammed Yunusa over a petition by a civil society organisation

Lawyer and rights activist, Inibehe Effiong,
has urged the National Judicial Commission
(NJC) to go all out against judges who have,
by their actions, soiled their hands and the
legal profession.

Inibehe Effiong says there are justice who
sell judgement and rulings in Nigeria
Effiong was reacting to the dismissal of
Justice Mohammed Yunusa of the Federal
High Court by the NJC, when he made this
demand.
Yunusa was dismissed after he was
reportedly found guilty of allegations against
him by the Civil Society Network Against
Corruption (CSNAC).
Comrade Olanrewaju Suraju, head of the
CSNAC, had petitioned the NJC over how
the judge allegedly granted interim and
perceptual injunctions in seven cases thus
restraining the Economic and Financial
Crimes Commission (EFCC) from taking
criminal actions against some suspects,
including Senator Stella Oduah.

In a statement signed by Soji Oye, NJC’s
acting director of information, council took
the decision to recommend the judge for
sack at its 77th meeting, which held on July
15, under the chairmanship of the Chief
Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Mahmud
Mohammed.
Effiong noted that the same judge allegedly
received bribes from two senior lawyers,
Ricky Tafar and Joseph Nwobiko, to pervert
the course of justice.
“The disciplinary action taken against Mr
Yunusa is commendable. Corrupt judicial
officers in the country should be purged from
the system.

“The NJC should be more decisive against the
bad eggs in the bench.
“There are other ‘Yunusas’ in the bench
across the country selling justice to the
highest bidders and compromising their oaths
of office.
“They need to be identified and dealt with
without fear or favour.
“Some dishonourable, corruptible and integrity-
challenged judges in Nigeria have badly
ridiculed the image of the judiciary in the eyes
of the Nigerian public.
“This has greatly eroded public confidence in
the judicial process and system.
“The consequence is that a dangerous
perception has been created that justice in
Nigeria, particularly in political, electoral and
anti-corruption cases, is for the highest
bidders.
“The EFCC should consider arresting and
prosecuting Mr Yunusa for any complicity that
may have been established against him in the
cases of the Senior Advocates of Nigeria
(SANs) who allegedly bribed him for favourable
judgments,” he said, Effiong is not the only lawyer or Nigerian
who is making this allegation. There have
been complaints about massive corruption in
the judiciary with calls for those in charge to
take action.
